‘Absolutely disgraceful’: Anger as car burnt out at Donaghcloney

'Incidents like this put lives at risk, cause fear for residents and damage the reputation of our village'

A car was burnt out in Donaghcloney late last night (Friday), with one local representative branding the incident ‘absolutely disgraceful’.

The car was set on fire at around 11pm at Main Street in the village.

Graffiti was also daubed on the walls of a property in the area.

Local DUP Alderman Mark Baxter has condemned those responsible and called for anyone with information to pass it on to police.

He said: “This is absolutely disgraceful behaviour and it cannot and will not be tolerated in our community.

“Incidents like this put lives at risk, cause fear for residents and damage the reputation of our village. We are a close knit community and this type of criminal activity must stop.

“Those responsible need to be identified and brought to justice.

“If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area around 11 pm, noticed unusual vehicles, or has any CCTV or dashcam footage, please contact the police directly. Alternatively you can send me a private message and I will ensure the information is passed on.

“Silence protects those responsible. Speaking up protects our community.

“Let’s stand together and make it clear that this behaviour has no place in Donacloney.”

A police spokesperson said: “Police in Lurgan received a report at approximately 11:30pm on Friday that a car had been set alight on Main Street.

“Police attended alongside colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who worked to extinguish the blaze, however, the vehicle has been completely destroyed.

“On examination of the area, sectarian graffiti has been observed on the wall of a property in the area.

“Police are working to establish whether there is a possible link between the arson and graffiti at this time and enquiries are on-going.

“Officers are asking anyone who may have information about this or who may have video footage including doorbell or other to get in contact on 101 quoting reference 1748 of 13/02/26.”
