A deep sense of grief has gripped the Lurgan community, stunned by the sudden passing of well-known personal mentor and coach, Geoff Gates.
The 47-year-old – affectionately known as Monkey – died at his home on Tuesday. As news spread, there was disbelief, as people mourned the devastating loss of a man who was adored by many and who helped so many others.
A funeral notice described him as the dearly loved son of Christine and Robert, and beloved brother of Andrew.
“I can barely believe it” – “Totally gutted.”
Those were the initial sentiments people expressed upon hearing of Geoff’s passing.
As the tributes flooded in, people spoke of Geoff’s “kind soul”.
“Always full of mischief and laughter; there’ll be some partying beyond the pearly gates now,” one person wrote.
Geoff, who grew up on Queen’s Walk, attended King’s Park Primary School and Lurgan Junior High School.
Another wrote: “So very sorry to hear this devastating news. I was in Geoff’s primary school class in King’s Park and have fond memories of how full of fun, mischief and laughter he was. Geoff was an incredibly intelligent and emotionally intelligent guy, and his loss will be felt by so many. Sending lots of love to his family and friends.”
One tribute read: “So, so sorry, I just can’t take this in. I was only speaking to him a few weeks ago. Such a beautiful soul who helped so many people. Sincere condolences to all the family. Sleep tight, Geoff.”
Geoff was well-travelled and loved in many far-flung corners of the world.
He had a love of people and a passion for helping others achieve their goals; many admired him for his work.
But it will be his family who will miss him the most.
His brother Andrew, speaking to NI World, said: “He was a kind-hearted soul and a good listener… he helped a lot of people – hundreds of people. He was good-hearted and very chaotic. He was a good soul.”
Funeral arrangements are to follow. House strictly private.
Geoff’s family have requested family flowers only, but donations, if desired, may be made to PIPS, c/o Malcomsons Funeral Service, 7 Robert Street, Lurgan, BT66 8BE.
Lovingly remembered by his sorrowing mum, dad, and brother.
