Newtownhamilton man found guilty of indecently assaulting two females following trial

A Newtownhamilton man has been found guilty on four counts of indecent assault against two separate females following a week-long trial.

James Patrick Shortt, of Dungormley Estate, had denied the offences, which date between March 1997 and April 2008, but was found guilty by a jury at Newry Crown Court earlier today (Thursday).

It was the second trial the 40-year-old had faced on the matters following the collapse of the original trial last year, over difficulties with his original defence team.

Three of the indecent assaults occurred on one victim between 1997 and 1999 while the fourth indecent assault occurred on April 2, 2008.

Following extensive deliberations, the jury returned their verdict of guilty on all four counts this afternoon.

Shortt will now be placed on the sex offenders’ register.

He was released on bail ahead of sentencing on May 2 to allow for the preparation of pre-sentence reports.

A temporary restraining order has been put in place against the two victims until May 2 when sentencing will be passed.
