The first every Tommy Makem Folk Festival held just weeks ago in Keady has been reported as a “wonderful success”.
Speaking of the cultural community event, Councillor Bróna Haughey – who was part of the organising committee – said: “It was a truly heartfelt celebration of music, community, heritage and most importantly, Tommy Makem!”
“The festival brought together musicians, historians, local families and visitors in a shared love of the traditions inspired by Tommy Makem.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase not only the vast amount of talent in Keady, but also the lovely community spirit!”
Organisers were delighted also to welcome the Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Jessica Johnston, to the festival who said: “It was great to meet with local historian Liam Ó Manacháin and learn more about Keady and its history. The walking tour provided great insight into the development of the town, its people and of course, about the life and legacy of Tommy Makem.”
That walking tour along with every concert, session and gathering helped to deepen the festival’s connection not just to music, but to place, memory and shared heritage.
The festival was born out of a love for Tommy’s songs, and love for the community that shaped him and keeps his spirit alive.
Said Cllr Haughey: “We are filled with hope and determination. We look forward to building on this success, growing our community, nurturing the talents of the generations coming after us through Tommy’s legacy and ensuring that next year’s festival is even stronger with more music, more voices, and more memories.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who took part: To the performers, whether headline acts or local folk groups, thank you for sharing your talent, songs and spirit. Your music was the heartbeat of the festival.
“To the volunteers and committee members, your dedication, hard work, and generosity made this possible. From organising concerts and sessions, to coordinating walking tours, workshops and events, your efforts brought the festival to life.
“To the sponsors, supporters and local community, your faith in our vision helped sustain the festival and made possible a gathering of strangers brought together by music, history, and friendship.
“To our funders, without your support, our festival simply would not have been possible. We greatly appreciate the support you gave our festival and we hope that we can continue this year on year.
“And especially to everyone who came along whether you joined us for a concert, a walking tour, a workshop, a film screening or simply to listen and be part of the gathering, thank you. Your presence, enthusiasm and love for the music made this festival what it is.”
