High prices recorded at Markethill cattle sale

AN entry of 500 cattle at Markethill sold in a very firm demand in all rings yesterday (Tuesday), May 14, with several high prices recorded in all sections.

Dairy stock sold to a top of £1680 for a calved heifer from a Loughgall farmer.  A Craigavon farmer sold a calved heifer at £1620.  Others sold from £1180 to £1320.

A large entry of top quality cows and calves returned an excellent demand. A Local farmer sold 7 salers 2nd and 3rd calvers with mostly bull calves at foot to a top of £1480 others sold at £1390, £1340 and £1300.

The 110 cull cows sold in another very strong demand with non-FQA cows selling exceptionally well.  Cow/heifers from £150 to £186 for 440k at £820.  Cows sold from £135 to £162 for 730k at £1180.  Fleshed friesians in exceptionally good demand from £124 to £141.50 for 630k at £890.  Second quality friesians from £100 to £115 per 100 kilos and the poorest lots from £70 to £90 per 100 kilos.  Young Friesian bulls to £186 for 720k at £1340.  Aged bulls to £1510 for 1130k WHD (134).  Clean cattle from £170 to £189 for 600k at £1135.

Demand for store cattle continued to be firm.  Forward bullocks sold to£225 for 510k at £1156.  Main demand from £192 to £221 for 510k at £1125.  Angus bullocks to £212 for 530k at £1120.  Middleweights sold to£231 for 460k at £1065.  All suitable types from £180 to £225 for 390k at £880.  Good quality friesians from £135 to £169 for 460k at £775.

Forward heifers sold to £203 for 550k at £1115.  Main demand from £180 to £195 per 100 kilos.  Middleweights from £180 to £203 for 340k at £690.  Second quality heifers sold readily from £160 to £175 per 100 kilos.  Hereford heifers in excellent demand from £170 to £192 for 510k at £980.

A large entry of 155 dropped calves maintained an excellent trade.  Bull calves to £405 for 2 week old Char.  The top 10 bulls averaged £304 each.  Heifer calves to £242 paid twice for Angus calves.  Main demand from £170 to £240.

The 100 reared calves sold readily.  Bulls sold to £695.  Heifers to £590 each.
