Funding opportunities are to be explored for a number of key developments in Tandragee – including an extension to the local recreation centre and construction of a new business park.
These are just two of the main recommendations contained within the Tandragee development plan, which has been compiled by Deloitte.
An events strategy in a bid to attract even more visitors also features.
The final development plan has now been presented to local community stakeholders.
The aim of the plan is to identify the short, medium and long term needs of Tandragee and to ensure the community is “empowered to develop a shared vision for their local area”.
A Tandragee Working Group is now being developed that local stakeholders will be able to join. It will be formed of a “representative mix” from the area comprising of key community, political, statutory and private sectors.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has been told that an “inclusive and partnership approach” will be required to successfully implement the plan.
And, with this in mind, stakeholders have agreed to the establishment of the workung group. They are considering a proposal to ensure a community-led nomination process to the steering group.
Their next meeting will see stakeholders presented with the finalised development plan.
They will also start the nomination process for the working group and identify funding for development proposals.
The development plan makes a number of recommendations, including the development of a local business park, reconfiguration and extension of Tandragee Recreation Centre, the promotion of local accommodation and the improvements of Gosford Forest Park at Markethill, which would also benefit the town.
The plan also recommends the development of a coordinated programme of local events, based upon the success of the likes of the Tandragee 100, the Soapbox Derby – which took place for the second time at the weekend – and the annual Christmas Lights.
The Tandragee 100 draws up to 10,000 to 15,000 spectators to the town, whilst the night time Soapbox Derby, in its inaugural year, drew over 2500 spectators into the centre of Tandragee.
