Former Ulster Unionist councillor dies in tractor accident

A veteran Ulster Unionist councillor has died after a tragic accident involving a tractor today (Monday).

John Leslie Hanna, a former chairman of Banbridge District Council, stood down ahead of the last election.

The 66-yer-old was married to another Ulster Unionist Councillor Joan Baird, who is a member of the new Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

Mr Hanna had represented Banbridge Council for 22 years.

The single vehicle accident, involving a tractor, happened in the Ballinalea Road area of Ballintoy, where he lived with his wife.

Inspector Ian Armour said the accident happened at around 3.45pm. The road has since reopened.

Mr Hanna was originally from Scarva.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his family at this tragic time.
