Five convicted of benefit fraud

FIVE people were convicted at Craigavon Magistrates’ court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Robert Winter (66) of Main Road, Moygashel claimed Pension Credit totalling £9,838 while failing to declare capital. He was given a five month prison sentence suspended for three years, fined £150 and ordered to pay court costs of £56.

William Rowe (54) of Stewarts Terraces, Portadown claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £2,541 while failing to declare capital. He was given 40 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £37.

Geraldine Gibson (41) of Bann Road, Castlewellan was fined £100 and ordered to pay court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Income Support totalling £436.

Michael Nugent (39) of Drumbeg, Tullygally was fined £120 and ordered to pay court costs of £38 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £263.

Sajid Ali (54) of Union Street, Lurgan was fined £100 and ordered to pay court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £228.

All are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
