Detectives investigating reports of a firearm being pointed at a taxi driver in Dungannon yesterday (Monday) have made an arrest.

The incident happened in the Market Square area of the Co. Tyrone and resulted in several nearby streets being cordoned off as police conducted a search for the firearm.

The man, aged 48, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Detective Sergeant Curley said: “The police cordon in Market Square has been removed however extensive searches are continuing in the area.

“I am appealing to anyone who may come across any suspicious items, or anything they believe may be a firearm, not touch it but contact police immediately.

“Enquiries are ongoing and witnesses or those with information can get in touch with detectives by calling 101, quoting reference 150 27/01/25.”

At around 5.30am on Monday morning, a taxi driver reported that a man armed with what was described as a handgun, had pointed the weapon at his vehicle and then drove off.

Police located a suspect on Northland Row a short time later. However, a weapon was not recovered.

Police then carried out a number of searches in the area.

DUP Councillor Clement Cutherbertson confirmed that police had closed off access to Perry Street Pay & Display carpark and the Church Lane area.

The councillor also confirmed that several businesses and services had been impacted as a result.

The Vineyard Church, which had intended to open a ‘warmbank’ refuge space providing warmth, electricity and refreshments to those effected by Storm Éowyn, announced that they had been forced to close.

In a statement, Vineyard Church said: “Please note that, due to an ongoing police operation in the Perry Street Carpark we are unable to open our warmbank today. We hope to open tomorrow, 28th at 9am.”
