He’s very loved but ‘please stop feeding’ Killyman celebrity – ‘Charlie the Donkey’

Those in Killyman will all know ‘Charlie the Donkey’, or more simply known as ‘Charlie’, to friends.

He lives on the Dungorman Road in the village and is a friendly and thoroughly well-cared for character.

But, in recent weeks Charlie has had his ups and downs.

He had a fairly nasty shake-up at the start of November after suffering “fireworks abuse”.

Thankfully, he was uninjured. But the experience left him noticeably morose.

One person commented on his clear change in demeanour, saying: “I called to see Charlie this morning with my son as we do every week and I wondered why he didn’t get up for his apples. He looked so sad! I thought he was sick! Such evil!”

His doting fans reacted the only way they knew how – with lots of love… and a showering of treats!

It even led one person to post a comical AI generated image of the equine replete with golden crown and carrot in mouth, entitle ‘Carrot King Charlie’ with a caption to say, he was being “treated like Royalty!”

There’s no doubt the community’s efforts were well intentioned… and Charlie certainly wasn’t complaining!

But his owner is… just a little.

Charlie has now been for a visit to the vet for a check-up and the sad news has come… he can’t have anymore treats.

The update made via the Killyman Chit Chat Facebook group read: “Ok folks, with regards to Charlie.

“Vet health check, today, November 12, it would be most welcome if all could stop feeding Charlie.”

The news may be disappointing for all those who enjoy spoiling the darling donkey, but while food is off the menu, Charlie’s owner is more than happy for him to continue receiving regular visits and pats of affection.

He added: “Your attention to Charlie is most welcome, your attention to the Vets advice is even more.

“Thanks to all.”
