Sinn Fein Councillor Colman Burns has said he is delighted that his campaign to erect a new bridge at Cully Road has come to fruition.
The new bridge, which Councillor Burns describes as “a victory for common sense and just reward for people’s patience,” will finally be started in the coming weeks.
Councillor Burns continued: “The present bridge, located below Stokes’ Mill, that stands adjacent to the Carrive Road, has been in a bad state of repair for many years.
“This bridge was built at a time when much less and much lighter traffic travelled our local roads. Today, Cully Road has many more houses and greatly increased associated traffic crossing the bridge daily.
“When local people brought this issue to my attention I contated Roads Service and the Rivers Agency and pointed out that the existing bridge was no longer fit for use.
“I explained that the only solution was a new bridge to replace the existing one. We had many meetings on site before we all agreed that this indeed was the only way forward.
“I can now confirm the plans have been drawn up, the long wait is over and work should begin in the coming weeks. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Cully Road for their patience on this matter.”
The Councillor concluded: “I must stress that, when work is ongoing, there will be diversions in place and I request that people are understanding of the situation.
“Anyone who finds themselves in a totally unacceptable situation or finds these delays intolerable should contact me. However the quicker this work is completed the better for everyone.”
