Crossmaglen man Caolan Finnegan lost his brave battle with illness early on Friday morning.
Affectionately known as Stringer, the 20-year-old fought hard against a brain cancer over the last 12 months.
A post on the Care for Caolan Facebook page announced his untimely passing.
“It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the untimely passing of our dear Caolan ‘Stringer’
May his beautiful and gentle soul Rest in Peace. Heaven will look after him now.”
Crossmaglen Rangers, a club Caolan played for with distinction, also posted: “Caolan lost his battle earlier this morning. A battle he fought with enormous courage, strength and dignity. We are so proud of you Caolan. A true Ranger.
“You will be forever remembered as one of the greatest who ever donned the black and amber. Forever in our hearts. Rest in peace Stringer.”
The club has suspended all its activities for the foreseeable future.
A talented footballer, Stringer – according to Armagh manager Kieran McGeeney recently – would have almost certainly played a part of the squad which, only a month ago, claimed a second All-Ireland title.
Members of the Armagh squad also paid the Cross’ man a visit, taking Sam Maguire to his home – a special moment that will forever be cherished by those in attendance and his heartbroken family.
Over the last 12 months there has been a phenomenal effort from the community to help raise hundreds of thousands of pounds to help Caolan battle his cancer.
From all at Armagh I, our thoughts and prayers are with Caolan’s family, friends and those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he Rest in Peace.
