Fundraiser to bring ‘Cookie’ home following Crossmaglen road collision

A fundraiser has been launched to help bring home the victim of a road traffic collision in Crossmaglen over the weekend.

Anthony James Atkins, who was affectionately known as ‘Cookie’, was a pedestrian when he was struck by a car on the Culloville Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Following a post mortem examination it is believed the 36-year-old was lying in the roadway when he was struck by a car shortly after midnight.

Mr Atkins, who was originally from Birmingham, had been living in Crossmaglen for a number of years, helping look after a relative in the area.

A fundraising page has been set up in a bid to return him home for burial in Birmingham.

His cousin, Laura, has helped set up the GoFundMe in an effort to raise £5,000.

“Most of you know Anthony has been in Ireland for the last 10 years with family helping mind our uncle Seamus,” she wrote.

“We need to get his body home to Birmingham, to his family and friends, so he can be buried like he deserves.

“Any donations are welcomed and will help to the family towards getting him to his final resting place so please donate whatever people can afford, whether it’s 1p or one pound, let’s get Cookie home and buried like he deserves, RIP Cookie.”

So far more than £1,000 has been raised.

Funeral details are expected to be announced at a later date.
