Crossmaglen mountaineer who conquered Everest for charity honoured with Civic Award

Altogether, she raised almost £3,000 for Evora Hospice - a cause she describes as 'close to her heart'

A Crossmaglen mountaineer who conquered Everest for charity has been honoured with a Civic Award from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Sarah Armstrong (31) successfully reached the summit of Everest on May 20, 2026… a death-defying feat that less than 8,000 have been able to accomplish over the course of 73 years.

Sarah’s incredible achievement makes her the tenth Irish woman to make the summit and only the third person to do so from Armagh. She is now also officially the youngest Irish woman to ever complete the world’s highest seven summits.

A homecoming party was arranged for Sarah’s return to Crossmaglen on May 26 to which hundreds turned out to show their support and admiration.

Altogether, she raised almost £3,000 for Evora Hospice – a cause she describes as “close to her heart”.

In recognition of her incredible achievement, Mayor Philip Campbell attended Crossmaglen to present Sarah with a Civic Award.

“An honour to hand over the award alongside Cllr Martin Hearty at Crossmaglen Community Centre to officially recognise Sarah’s remarkable achievement through the Council,” said the Mayor.
