A Co Armagh GAA club have paid tribute to a popular young Irishman who died following a serious “motor accident” in Perth, Australia.
Shane Irwin, from Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan, was involved in a devastating accident over the weekend.
He was immediately transported to hospital where he entered into a “brave battle” to survive his injuries.
At home, a special decade of the rosary was held at Lisdoonan Community Centre, where prayers were held for his recovery and to give strength to his heartbroken family and friends.
Sadly, the young man, described as “a lovely lad, always smiling”, passed away on Monday (October 5).
A GoFundMe page launched in Perth to support Shane’s recovery has now been named in “loving memory”. At the time of writing it has received more than $11,000 AUD.
The fundraiser said Shane had “a character that was infectious and a smile that would light a room”, adding, “Anyone that was lucky enough to have spent time with him during his time in Australia would give testament to this.”
Monies raised will be used to support his grieving family both at home in Ireland and in Australia as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.
A special word of thanks was given to Royal Flying Doctors Perth, Royal Intensive Care Unit Perth, the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and the Claddagh Association.
Upon learning the heart-breaking news, Crossmaglen Rangers GAA club, where several of Shane’s cousins are members, said: “Our deepest condolences to the Irwin and McGuinness families on the tragic loss of your beloved Son, Brother, Nephew, Cousin and friend Shane.
“A number of cousins of Shane’s are current players. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this heartbreaking time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
A death notice said he will be deeply regretted and sadly missed by his heartbroken parents Bob and Helen, his brothers Cathal (Tegan), Aidan and Keith, his sister Lisa, his aunts, uncles, cousins, the extended McGuinness and Irwin families and his wide circle of friends here and in Australia.
He was also the brother of Katie, who died in infancy and a beloved grandson to Kathleen and Michael McGuinness and Bob and Kitty Irwin.
It is understood that Shane will be repatriated to Ireland with the support of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, whom donations are being gratefully received for.
His death notice adds: “May his fun-loving spirit rest in peace and may his cheeky smile never be forgotten.”
