A charity spinathon hosted by the borough’s Deputy Lord Mayor has raised over £1,900 for a local breast cancer charity.
And the Alliance Party’s Jessica Johnston has thanked all those who came along and offered their support for the big event.
The charity spinathon was organised for Pretty in Pink and was held at the South Lakes Leisure Centre in Craigavon on Friday.
DLM Johnston was delighted with the success of the event when she provided an update at Monday night’s full meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
The spinathon – over the course of 12 hours – saw more than 30 participants on the day.
Councillor Johnston thanked all who took part and the councillors, council staff and directors and others who came along to offer their support, as well as her family, friends and colleagues and those who helped with the organisation, including the staff at the leisure centre and communications team.
She said: “It was a really enjoyable day, a social occasion, and one that was good for everyone’s physical wellbeing, I hope. My legs are still recovering after six hours on the bike!
“We had over 30 people take part, over 350 miles cycled.”
Councillor Johnston said over £1,900 had been raised for Pretty in Pink, which she explained was the only dedicated breast cancer charity in Northern Ireland.
She added: “The work that they do right across Northern Ireland is fantastic, especially in our own ABC area, with their office in Portadown.”
Councillor Johnston said Pretty in Pink was a cause “very close to my heart”, and thanked all for their donations – in person and online – which would “make such a difference to the continued good work of the charity”.
“It’s certainly a very memorable day for my term,” she added.
Lord Mayor Stephen Moutray thanked the Deputy for “spearheading this very worthwhile initiative”.
To much laughter, he quipped: “It was delightful for me to call in on Friday morning, but unfortunately time constraints meant I couldn’t get on the bicycle!
“I thought it was a very wise move to have on a Friday as it gave some people the weekend to recover.
“But, in all seriousness, congratulations and well done to you and everyone who participated.”
