Tullygally PS sign up to become a ‘Get Moving School’

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough (ABC) Council is calling on primary schools across the borough to put movement and play at the heart of school life by signing up to become a ‘Get Moving School.’

By signing up to the programme, schools are pledging their commitment to providing a high-quality play, physical activity and sports offering.

The ‘Get Moving ABC’ partnership recognises that schools are a key setting where children and young people get the opportunity to take part in daily physical activity and develop a love for movement!

Speaking about the programme, Lord Mayor of ABC Council, Alderman Margaret Tinsley said: “We know how much primary schools across the borough already value the positive impact of physical activity. This initiative aims to support schools to further enhance what’s currently being offered. It’s a fantastic chance for schools to showcase and champion the wonderful work they do to promote a healthy, happy and active school.

“I encourage primary schools to get involved and reap the benefits of being an active school!”

Evidence shows that children and young people who are physically active every day, are more likely to have higher levels of physical and mental wellbeing leading to the development of healthy habits for life.

However key findings from the recent Children’s Sport Participation and Physical Activity Study 2022 show that only 21% of primary school pupils across Northern Ireland are meeting national physical activity guidelines.

Tullygally Primary School is the first school to sign up to the initiative. Mr Guy, Vice Principal said:
“At Tullygally PS we know first-hand the importance and benefits of keeping our children active. We are continuously creating a culture of movement and a love of nature and the great outdoors through play and outdoor learning activities across the curriculum.

“We work with Sustrans NI to promote active travel to and from school and travel actively to our swimming lessons using our school bikes and the black paths network around Craigavon. We also take part in the Daily Mile and offer a wide range of extracurricular activities.

“We are delighted to sign up as a Get Moving School.”

As a ‘Get Moving School’, schools will be supported by the council’s Sports Development team to ensure children have the opportunity to meet and exceed the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance of 60 active minutes a day.

Schools will also be introduced to support organisations including The Daily Mile, Sustrans NI and the National Governing Bodies of Sport. Schools will also receive guidance on council sports, play and community programmes, training and development opportunities and funding available.

The ‘Get Moving School’ programme is supported by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Sport NI, The Community and Voluntary Sector Panel, Public Health Agency, Education Authority, NI Chest Heart and Stroke, Ulster GAA and ABC Council.
