Medical trainees at Daisy Hill Hospital now have access to the very latest training facilities with the opening of a new Education Centre.

Both Daisy Hill and Craigavon Area hospitals are Queens University Teaching Hospitals.

Around 110 junior doctors and medical students complete placements at Daisy Hill each year across medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, cardiology, radiology, care of the elderly, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and psychiatry.

Located on the lower ground floor near the dining room, the new Medical Education Centre includes a number of training rooms with video conferencing equipment, wifi and a hi-tech simulation suite to practice ward based scenarios.

The suite is used for a range of training including junior doctor’s induction and objective structured clinical examinations ‘OSCEs’.

Medical students and other clinical staff are benefitting from the latest simulation equipment for training including, intravenous fluid management and prescribing, birthing, breast, abdominal and urinary catheterisation procedures.

The suite is supported by the Medical Education Team, based on the first floor of Clanrye House which also includes an open access library and study space.

Welcoming the expansion of medical training facilities at Daisy Hill, Deputy Medical Director for Education for the Southern Trust Dr Aisling Diamond said: “We are very proud of our medical education team who through hard work and enthusiasm are totally committed to welcoming and developing student and junior doctors in our hospitals.

“The new medical education centre is a great boost to our facilities at Daisy Hill. Simulation is particularly beneficial to giving students a real world clinical experience to help them transition from theoretical learning to practice, so we are delighted to have the very best equipment available.

“A huge thanks to our fantastic medical education team, estates, planning and other support colleagues for their drive and creativity in developing this new space to ensure that medical trainees who come to Daisy Hill get the very best experience.”
