The Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has opened an online book of condolence in memory of Pope Francis.
The Pope passed away yesterday morning (April 21) – aged 88 – following a 12 year pontificate.
Of the Pope’s death and legacy, Lord Mayor Sarah Duffy said: “It is with profound sorrow that I, as Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, extend my deepest condolences on the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis.
“Pope Francis was a spiritual leader who embodied compassion, humility and courage. Throughout his papacy, he championed the causes of the poor, the marginalised and the oppressed. He reminded us all of the power of mercy, kindness and inclusion in a world too often divided.
“As the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, Armagh shares in the deep mourning felt by millions across this island and around the world. The legacy of Pope Francis will endure through his teachings, his example and the love he inspired.”
The Vatican News has announced that the body of the late Pope Francis will be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9am to lie in state until his funeral on Saturday morning at 10am.
The Holy See Press Office announced today (Tuesday) that Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside at the funeral Mass, which will be concelebrated by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from across the globe.
The Eucharistic celebration will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio, marking the beginning of the Novemdiales, or nine days of mourning and Masses for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul.
The late Pope’s body will then be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica and then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment.
The online book of condolence can be accessed here.
Physical books of condolence will also be placed in the coming days in the three civic buildings in Armagh Palace, Craigavon Civic & Conference Centre and the Civic Building in Banbridge.
