Residents across the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) borough are being advised that their bin collection days may change from week commencing Monday 26 October 2026.
The changes form part of a borough-wide route optimisation programme designed by ABC Council to help deliver a more efficient, reliable and cost-effective waste collection service that continues to meet the needs of a growing community.
Over 91,000 households will receive an information leaflet containing their new collection schedule and a six-month calendar delivered directly by post between October 5 and October 15. Householders are asked to read the information carefully and keep the leaflet in a safe place.
What do residents need to do?
- Check their leaflet to find out if their collection day is changing
- Check their new collection day online at www.armaghbanbridgecraigavon.gov.uk/binchanges
- Put their bin out by 7am on their new collection day
- Continue to present their bin in the same location as usual
- Continue to follow existing bin and recycling guidance.
Black, green and brown bins will continue to be collected on a fortnightly basis. The main change for affected households will be the day their bins are collected.
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, Councillor Mary O’Dowd said: “We understand that any change to household bin collection arrangements can take a little time to get used to, which is why we are providing residents with information well in advance of the new schedules coming into effect.
“The changes are part of a borough-wide route optimisation programme which will allow us to better balance collection routes and workloads across the borough, helping us provide a more efficient and reliable service while also making better use of our resources.
“I would encourage every household to take the time to check their new collection information and make a note of their new collection day. It is particularly important that bins are presented by 7am on the correct day from week commencing 26 October.”
Why are the changes being made?
The Council’s waste collection routes are being reviewed and optimised to reflect the changing needs of the borough. The programme will help to:
- Respond to population growth with more than 91,000 households across the borough and continued development, waste collection arrangements need to adapt to changing demand
- Improve service reliability with better-balanced routes and workloads to help support a more reliable service delivery
- Improve cost-effectiveness as smarter routing will allow the Council to deliver the same core service more efficiently
- Reduce environmental impact as optimised routes can reduce unnecessary mileage, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions.
What about the changeover period?
Some households may experience a longer gap between collections as they move from their existing schedule to their new collection schedule. Residents are asked to be patient during this transition period and to plan accordingly. If residents have surplus residual waste or recyclable material, they can use their nearest Household Recycling Centre.
Recycling reminder
Residents are also reminded that putting the correct materials into the appropriate recycling bins helps ensure materials can be processed and turned into new products.
Green and brown bins should only contain the materials specified by Council. Incorrect items can result in contamination and, in some circumstances, a bin may not be emptied.
