Fundraiser launched to support family of tragic Moira hiker

'It is in times of sadness and loss when people can come together to help one another make it through'

A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of a Moira man who passed away suddenly while hiking in Donegal.

Carl Henderson had been climbing Mount Errigal on April 26 when he became seriously unwell and collapsed.

Following transportation to Letterkenny University Hospital the 48-year-old father-of-three was tragically pronounced dead.

He was laid to rest at St. Colman’s Cemetery in Kilwarlin on May 2 following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick and St Ronan’s Church, Magheralin.

His untimely passing prompted an outpouring of grief from the local community, with many describing Carl as “lovely, kind and thoughtful man”, and true gentleman who brought a light into the lives of so many.

A fundraiser has now been launched on behalf of Carl’s wife, Caroline and three children, Aibhilín, Rían, and Caoimhe to help support them in the trying days to come.

The GoFundMe page created by Vanessa Ribeiro explains: “Everyone is aware of the sudden sad passing of Carl Henderson on Saturday 26th April 2025.

“Carl was a devoted, wonderful and loving husband to Caroline and a loving caring father to his three children Aibhilin, Rían and Caoimhe.

“With all of the emotional pain and stress that death brings, it can also bring financial burdens. We would like to raise money for Carl’s wife Caroline and the children to help with any family expenses etc.

“It is in times of sadness and loss when people can come together to help one another make it through. Any support you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

“Please keep Carl’s wife Caroline and children in your thoughts and prayers.

“Thank you in advance for your loving kindness.”

The effort has been set with a target of £5,000 and has in just two days already surpassed the halfway mark reaching just over £2,800 at the time of writing.
