Community support in action as organisations open doors to help Storm Éowyn affected

South Lake Leisure Centre in Craigavon

Three days after Storm Éowyn wrought havoc across Co. Armagh and further afield, many are still dealing with the aftermath.

Broken fences, fallen trees, and smashed roof tiles aside, some still find themselves without basic services.

This morning (Monday) NIE Networks confirmed that around 65,000 of their customers remain without electricity across Northern Ireland.

They have been working around the clock since the storm caused “extensive damage” to the electricity network, and power has since been restored to 220,000 properties.

A number of NIE community assistance centres are open today to help support those without power.

These include Brownlow Community Hub and Dungannon Leisure Centre.

Across the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon area, there are a number of drop-in centres open this morning also.

They are:

  • Armagh Orchard Leisure Centre: 6:00am – 10:00pm
  • Banbridge Leisure Centre: 6:00am – 10:00pm
  • Brownlow Community Hub: 9:00am – 9:30pm
  • Dromore Community Centre: 6:00am – 10:00pm
  • Gilford Community Centre: 9:00am – 10:00pm
  • TMAC Centre, Keady: 8:30am – 10:00pm
  • Lurgan Town Hall: 9:00am – 8:30pm
  • Portadown Town Hall: 8:30am – 9:00pm
  • Ashgrove Community Centre, Portadown: 8:30am – 9:30pm
  • Killicomaine Community Centre, Portadown: 9:00am – 9:00pm

  • Richhill Recreation Centre: 4:00pm – 10:00pm
  • Tandragee Recreation Centre: 9:00am – 10:00pm

The impact of the storm has also seen a wide range of churches and community organisations step in to provide support for people still affected.

Benburb Priory are open today from 11am to allow access to hot water, phone charging and showers.

Tandragee Presbyterian Church have opened their church hall kitchen from 6.30am to allow the public to access hot water and microwaves.

Moy Presbyterian Church will be open from 6pm to 9pm.

Newry, Mourne and Dow are helping facilitate Community Drop-in Centres, which will be open from 10am until 9pm.

These will be open as follows:

– Newry Leisure Centre
– Bessbrook Community Centre
– Cloughreagh Community Centre, Bessbrook
– Crossmaglen Community Centre

The facilities will enable residents who have been impacted by power cuts to come along to get a hot drink, charge your device, get a shower and speak to a member of our team who will be on hand to offer support.
