Claims ‘up to to 100 families’ hit by unacceptable delays for paediatric surgery

MP to meet Trust over situation at Craigavon and Daisy Hill Hospitals

Scores of families waiting for paediatric surgery are facing “unacceptable” waiting lists at local hospitals.

And the blame for the situation arising has been laid amid claims both Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry and Craigavon Area Hospital are not running at full capacity.

Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has said the delay by the Southern Trust in providing paediatric surgery is “completely unacceptable”.

And the MP will meet with the Southern Health Trust tomorrow (Friday) to discuss the issue.

“Children’s theatres in both Craigavon and Daisy Hill Hospitals have not been running at full capacity,” said Mr Brady.

“This is a completely unacceptable situation which needs to be rectified  as a matter of urgency.”

He said there were reports that as many as 100 families have been affected.

Added Mr Brady: “This no doubt has caused those involve huge stress and frustration.

“It is quite obvious that there has been a break down in communication between the Trust and those families awaiting treatment.

“Whilst the Trust has apologised for idistress and inconvenience involved’, what is actually needed is a full explanation into how this situation was allowed to develop and an outline on actions taken on how the issue will be addressed and resolved.

“In the meantime, anyone who is concerned should contact 02837562495 for advice and information.”
