ABC Council only borough in NI to offer ‘lifeline’ programme for cancer sufferers

'Move More has supported my physical, mental and social recovery after my cancer diagnosis. Without it I would not have got through my journey as well as I have'

A physical activity programme designed to support people living “with and beyond” cancer received incredibly high praise from participants, which has now been echoed by Lord Mayor Stephen Moutray at a full meeting of Council.

At the meeting on Monday (February 23) the Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council explained he had the fortune of visiting a ‘Macmillan Move More’ class at South Lake Leisure Centre on World Cancer Day.

ABC Council is the “only Council in Northern Ireland” where these classes are available, said the Lord Mayor.

And during his visit he had the chance to chat and meet with “many folk” whose lives have been impacted by cancer.

Stressing that he was “so impressed”, he took the opportunity to share with members the comments of one incredibly thankful participant, whose words were as follows: “Move More has supported my physical, mental and social recovery after my cancer diagnosis. Without it I would not have got through my journey as well as I have.

“The support team, Nuala McVeigh and the other participants have meant the world and I have encouraged anyone with a diagnosis to attend. It has really been a lifeline to me.”

Continued the Lord Mayor: “Could I place on record my thanks to Nuala McVeigh and to Gillian Stewart and the team in relation to the work they do around this and I would like if anyone could broadcast this work if you know of anyone in this position because really it was a very happy morning to be with these people who have gone through – some of them – quite a lot.”
