A devoted dad who was ‘always smiling’: Tributes flow after tragic loss of Matthew ‘Chitchu’ Henry

A heartbreaking tragedy for Matthew's father and brother and the entire family, it comes too soon after the devastating loss of his dear sister Hannah in January last year

Tributes have been paid to a popular young man whose body was discovered on the Mall in Armagh, as the deceased was named locally as Matthew “Chitchu” Henry.

Police sealed off the area at the Courthouse end of the Mall early on Sunday morning after Matthew, who had been living in Craigavon, was found.

Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Matthew was an absolutely devoted dad to two young girls — the loves of his life — and the community across County Armagh has been shocked and saddened by the loss of such a popular young man.

A son of Martin and brother to Mark, the family were left devastated following the untimely loss of Matthew and Mark’s sister Hannah in January last year, having already suffered the loss of their mum, Denise.

Matthew attended Drumcree College and Southern Regional College in Portadown.

He had been employed in a number of roles throughout his working life and was known for being gifted with his hands. He worked as a handyman, undertaking all manner of tasks as required, and was also a skilled welder.

He was a keen sports fan and a talented boxer.

Friends and family have rushed to pay tribute on social media, stunned and struggling to come to terms with the news.

Cousin Sarah Jane Harper wrote: “Life is so flipping cruel. You weren’t just a cousin, you were like a brother to me — always looked out for me, never turned your back on me. To say I will miss you is an understatement, cuz. Until we meet again.”

Another cousin wrote: “Rest easy, Matthew. Your two girls will carry on your name.”

Floral tributes left on the Mall in Armagh

One more said: “One of the few who was always checking in on me — always. I also checked in on him, but the last few weeks he seemed really happy. I missed his call last night. I rang him back but got no answer. I’m gutted I couldn’t save him this time or help. It’s too late now. RIP, cuz. I’ll see you on the other side.”

Further tributes described Matthew as “always smiling” and “the life and soul of the party”, with one friend adding: “It’s never goodbye, my friend.”

Another wrote: “He looked like he was loving life lately. Always a happy-go-lucky man. Rest easy, Matt. That’s devastating for the family. Condolences.”

Yet another said: “Had the pleasure of working with Chitchu in the hospital. He was a complete gentleman. Rest in peace.”

Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalised.

To Matthew’s heartbroken family and his many friends, we offer our sincere condolences at this tragic time. May he rest in peace.
