The union flag will fly 365 days a year above Craigavon Civic Centre.
A Sinn Fein motion, brought forward by councillor Gemma McKenna, was defeated at a meeting of the council last night.
Cllr. McKenna had claimed flying the flag every day was contrary to good community relations.
Before the meeting she said: “It’s not too late for Unionist politicians to show leadership on this issue and rescind this decision. If they don’t they are exposing themselves and this council to both the courts and the Local Government Auditor.”
Nonetheless, the motion was quashed with 14 votes from the DUP and UUP in opposition while eight Sinn Fein and SDLP councillors voting in support.
