Councillor urges people to register Ponytzpass housing interest

SDLP Cusher Councillor Sharon Haughey-Grimley is urging people looking for housing in the Poyntzpass area to register their interest with the Housing Executive before the end of March.
Her call comes on the back of the Housing Executive launching a latent demand test for Poyntzpass to assess the need for social housing in the area.
Cllr Haughey-Grimley said: “There is a real need for more social housing for the Poyntzpass area. Over the years Housing Executive stock has been diminished as many householders took the opportunity to buy their own homes.  This was a great opportunity for individuals, couples and families to keep their roots firmly in Poyntzpass and to own their own home at an affordable price.
“However, with reduced social housing stock available, many local people are now forced to move out of the village and that has a serious impact on community life.
“Poyntzpass Community and Regeneration Committee continue to highlight the need for social housing in Poyntzpass so that local young people can stay in the area and so that the village can continue to grow and thrive.
“It is very welcome that Housing Executive has now agreed to carrying out this assessment of need and it is vital that all those interested in living in Poyntzpass, either now or in the future, registers their interest before the end of March.
“I urge young people thinking about where they would like to settle in the future, and those with families who would like to come back to the area, as well as individuals and older people to register their interest.  This is a real opportunity to highlight the need for social housing and to put pressure on the Housing Executive to provide new housing stock.”
The SDLP Councillor concluded: “Poyntzpass has so much to offer, with excellent transport links being situated on the main Newry to Portadown road, good public transport with its own railway line, two Primary schools, places of worship, a preschool playgroup, excellent community meeting facilities, sports clubs and many local businesses and hospitality traders.  It’s a beautiful village with a strong cross community ethos and a place many people would be proud to live.”
Anyone interested in living in Poyntzpass should register their interest with Housing Executive before end of March by ringing 02838315870 or emailing south.planning@nihe.gov.uk quoting ‘LD Poyntzpass’
