Councillor celebrate roles in sport at International Women’s Day

SDLP councillors Sharon Haughey-Grimley and Mealla Campbell were joined by the candidate for Westminster Justin McNulty on International Women’s Day in Armagh to highlight the important role women play in our society.

The two young female councillors regularly raise issues relating to women in the council chamber, and as two working mothers they know only too well the many challenges women face.

On International Women’s Day they were delighted to be joined by Armagh GAA legend Justin McNulty who is running for Westminster.

Justin McNulty said: “I was delighted to attend this event profiling women in sport along with Mealla Campbell and Sharon Haughey. It was a very inspirational event for the young women who attended from schools across Armagh.  Armagh Ladies and NI Netball star Caroline O’Hanlon, Dame Mary Peters, Lynda Doherty and Niamh Winters from Special Olympics are all inspirational in their own right and show that women, despite the many challenges they face, can and do make a significant contribution to our society and in particular sport. I was inspired by their determination, discipline and relentless pursuit of their goals.
“I congratulate Armagh Council for organising such a positive event to inspire the next generation of women leaders in our county.  I know Sharon and Mealla will continue to highlight women’s issues in the new Council Chamber to ensure fairness and equality for all.”
