The number of deaths on local roads is increasing compared to previous years.
And Newry and Armagh SF MLA Cathal Boylan, who sits on the Environment Committee at Stormont, has said urgent action is needed to stop the carnage on the roads and “get us back to the downward trend in deaths of recent years”.
Mr Boylan said: “Last year 56 people died on our roads, yet this year we have now seen 53 people killed before we enter what are usually the months when more fatalities occur.
“Over the past few years we were on a downward cycle with less people killed on the roads year on year.
“Now we are back to a position that has seen an increase both this year and last year.
“We now need to have a serious look at how, why and where these fatalities are occurring and devise a strategy that will save lives on the roads.”
