Detectives are appealing for witnesses after reports of a number of burglaries in the Bessbrook area, which they believe are linked.
Detective Constable Brannigan explained: “We received reports of burglaries in the Clogharevan Park, Millvale Park, Riverside Crescent and Main Street areas of Bessbrook between 8.40 and 10pm on Wednesday, March 13.
“The next day, shortly after 6pm, we received a further report of a burglary at a property in Church View, Bessbrook.
“We believe these incidents occurred sometime between the early evening of Wednesday, March 13 and 10pm that night.
“Sums of money and items of jewellery, including a wedding ring and an engagement ring, were stolen.
“We believe these burglaries may be linked at this time and we are keen to speak to anyone who was in any of these areas between these times and saw any suspicious activity to contact us.
“We are also appealing to anyone who saw a black Audi A4 – registration RJ14VGO – between these times in the Bessbrook area to contact us.
“Anyone with information they believe would assist our investigation, or who is sold jewellery in suspicious circumstances is asked to call detectives in Ardmore on 101, quoting reference 1267 of 13/03/19.”
Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
Detective Constable Brannigan is also appealing to home and business owners to protect their properties, and added: “We are aware of the impact that burglaries can have on individual householders. Don’t make it easy for thieves. Stay alert to your surroundings and report anything suspicious to police immediately.
“I want to encourage everyone to report suspicious activity to us, no matter how insignificant it may seem. The report of a suspicious vehicle or people acting strangely in your neighbourhood can help us to prevent and detect crime.
“Please ensure that all houses, sheds and garages are secured, particularly during the hours of darkness. Do not keep valuables or large amounts of cash in your home and remember, safes are able to be removed. Do not leave any tools/ladders outside which can be used to access your property. Do not answer the door during the hours of darkness unless you are expecting someone or you have a security latch and can check identity first.
“Keep an eye on your property and please report to the police any suspicious callers or vehicles. This includes cold callers or services being offered at inflated prices. If you do have CCTV systems, please ensure that they are working, and please look out for elderly/vulnerable neighbours and check on them regularly.”
