Man holding children’s carrycot assaulted by man wearing balaclava

The victim is believed to have suffered facial injuries

A man holding a child’s carrycot was assaulted by someone wearing a balaclava in Bessbrook last night (Wednesday).

Police in Newtownhamilton are appealing for witnesses following the assault of the man in his 60s in the Charlemont Square East area of Bessbrook just before 11pm.

Sergeant Thomas Shields said: “This man was reported to be carrying a child’s carrycot, containing a number of other items, from a house and putting them into his car when he was approached by a male wearing a balaclava.

“This male spoke to him before assaulting him and making off with the carrycot and its contents. The victim is believed to have suffered facial injuries.

“The assailant is described as being around 5’ 6” in height, of heavy build and having a local accent.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area late last night to get in touch with police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1373 of 19/4/17.

“Alternatively, if you would prefer to provide information without giving your details, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
