Man charged with murdering Bessbrook father-of-two Brian Phelan

27-year-old due in court on Saturday

A man has been charged with murdering a Bessbrook father-of-two on Thursday.

Brian Phelan died after a suspected knife attack in the Carrivekenney Road area of Corrinshego, just outside Newry.

First responders attended the incident shortly after 3.15pm, but the 32-year-old is understood to have passed away from his injuries at the scene.

A man was arrested on suspicion of his murder a short time later.

Detectives from Serious Crime Branch have now charged a man with Mr Phelan’s murder.

The 27-yeaar-old is due to appear at Newry Magistrates’ Court today (Saturday).

As is normal procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Funeral arrangements for Mr Phelan – a son of Angela and Paddy, father to Georgia and Brian, and brother of Michelle and Ashling – have yet to be confirmed.
