Lawyers representing a Bessbrook mechanic being prosecuted for a defective tyre – while allegedly driving a customer’s car to have the tyre replaced – have asked for additional time to make representations on his behalf.
The case of Patrick Martin McCabe – with an address in Church View – appeared before Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (August 19).
The 62-year-old mechanic has been charged with a single count of having a defective tyre on June 17, 2026 in the vicinity of New Street, Newry.
Defence counsel for McCabe – instructed by ML White Solicitors – asked Deputy District Judge Kennedy to take three weeks for update in the matter as opposed to the standard two weeks, explaining, “This is a mechanic in customer’s car who was stopped on the way to get new tyres.
“My understanding is he has diffciulties in a strict legal sense, but I hope under the circumstances, that we might be able to excite some humility from the prosecution.”
Judge Kennedy granted the request and adjourned the matter to allow for representations to be made.
The case will reappear before Newry Magistrates’ Court on September 9.
