Residents are up in arms over the illegal dumping of building material – on an industrial scale – close to a play area in Bessbrook.
Lorry loads of building waste have been emptied onto an area at the rear of Fr Cullen Park, just yards from where children congregate to play.
Slieve Gullion area Sinn Fein councillor Declan Murphy has condemned those responsible for the criminal act.
“I share the anger of the local residents,” said Councillor Murphy.
“Fly-tipping has no place in our countryside. The actions of those involved in this type of activities are absolutely disgusting, they have no respect for environment or residents of the area.
“Every year Newry, Mourne and Down Council spends huge amount of ratepayers money to cleaning up these messes, this is totally wrong and has to stop.
“I would also urge the members of public to be vigilant and report the cases of illegal dumping straight away.”
Concluding, the local representative, said: “Hopefully on this specific incident we may be able to identify those engaged in this criminal activity.
“In the meantime, anyone who might recognise any of the individuals or vehicles involved should contact the Environmental Health Department at Newry, Mourne and Down Council. The owners of the property will be requested to firmly secure access to their land, in order to stop entry by those who want to dump their illicit waste.”
