Co Armagh toddler knocked down in tragic accident named locally

A toddler knocked down and killed in a tragic accident on Friday has been named locally as Christopher Ward.

The three-year-old was injured after being hit by a vehicle in Dobsons Way, Bessbrook.

It is understood the car was being driven by a relative.

His family rushed him to Daisy Hill hospital but died from his injuries around 1pm.

Inspector Denise Graham speaking on Friday said: “Police can confirm that a young boy has died after being struck by a vehicle in Dobsons Way in Bessbrook.

“The young boy was taken to hospital for treatment but unfortunately died from his injuries.

“We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact officers in Newry by calling 101 quoting reference number 399 of 11/08/17.”

Bessbrook councillor Roisin Mulgrew offered up her condolences to the grieving family.

“This tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and the loss will be felt in every home in the area, but not least with the grieving family.

“My thoughts are with his family and friends over the coming weeks and months as they come to terms with this tragedy, as will those of every citizen in the area.”

MLA for the area Justin McNulty added: “This is a complete tragedy, one that will be felt by the entire community.

“Our thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences are with the deceased, his family and community at this very difficult time.”
