A Bessbrook man accused of attempting to murder a woman has appeared in court.

Colin Paul Mooney, of Dobsons Way, appeared in Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, via videolink from Maghaberry, facing a charge of attempted murder.

The 35-year-old is also accused of possessing an offensive weapon, namely a hatchet.

The alleged offences occurred sometime overnight between Friday, November 15 and Saturday morning of November 16.

District Judge Eamon King queried whether this was Mooney’s first appearance, however, the prosecution outlined that he had the charges put to him on Saturday, November 23.

None of the facts surrounding the charges were outlined in court with the prosecution stating that the case was at “a relatively early stage”.

A full file is due on January 21.

Judge King adjourned the case until January 15 for an update.

Mooney was remanded back into custody.
