St. Paul’s High School Bessbrook is set to take part in one of the world’s most famous celebrations – the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City!
The parade – which will take place on March 17 – is the largest of its kind in the world.
Their anticipated attendance marks a major milestone for the school’s music department, as years of dedication, practice, and hard work have culminated in this prestigious opportunity to perform at such a renowned event.
Speaking to Armagh I, the school’s Musical Director Mr Peter Slane explained that 46 children along with their parents and extended family members will grace the city’s famous Fifth Avenue.
Mr Slane explained: “46 talented students from the school’s samba group will be heading to New York City to showcase their skills.
“They will be travelling from March 14 to March 19, ensuring they are well-prepared to take part in this highly anticipated event.
“Their participation represents not only a remarkable achievement for the students themselves but also highlights the school’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and music from around the world.”
Ethnic percussion has been an integral part of St. Paul’s musical culture for years, providing students with a diverse range of musical experiences.
The school is proud to have more than 160 students engaged in learning and performing styles of music that include African drumming, samba and the distinctive sounds of the steel pan.
Mr Slane attests that the inclusion of ethnic percussion has not only enriched the musical education at the school but has also fostered a sense of community and cultural awareness among the students.
The samba group’s involvement in the parade promises to add a vibrant and energetic flair to the procession, combining the rhythmic beats of Brazil with the Irish spirit of the day.
This performance will give the students an opportunity to share their passion for music with an international audience and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Continued Mr Slane: “St. Paul’s High School Bessbrook’s involvement in the 2025 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City is a testament to the talent and hard work of its students and staff.
“It’s a proud moment for the school, and one that will surely inspire future generations of musicians to aim for greatness.
“The school community is looking forward to the unforgettable experience and is excited to see how their samba rhythms will blend with the festive atmosphere of New York’s iconic parade.”
And, if you are at the Athletic Grounds at the weekend for the Dublin game you might just be lucky enough to hear this group performing and fundraising outside the stadium!
