Urgent calls for traffic calming measures after child knocked down close to school

Mossvale Road in Dromore

An ABC councillor has called for urgent traffic calming measures to be assessed following a road traffic collision involving a child close to a school in Dromore on Wednesday afternoon.

Alderman Paul Rankin said he was contacted after an incident on the Mossvale Road, close to the junction with Moss Lane, in an area that experiences heavy traffic linked to school drop-offs, local businesses and the nearby amenity site.

“I was contacted and made aware of an accident this afternoon along the Mossvale Road, Dromore,” Alderman Rankin said.

“Praying for the young child and family. I have sent correspondence to DFI Roads asking they undertake a traffic calming assessment along the Mossvale Road on both approaches to the Primary School and asked Police to monitor speed along the road.”

In formal correspondence to the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads, the councillor described the incident as “distressing”, noting that a young child had been knocked down while crossing the road near Moss Lane.

He highlighted concerns about the volume and speed of traffic in the area, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times at Dromore Primary School, and requested that a traffic calming assessment be carried out as soon as possible.

Alderman Rankin has asked that both approaches to the primary school be assessed, suggesting measures such as speed cushions to improve safety for pedestrians, especially children.

Police have confirmed that officers attended the scene following a report received at around 4.20pm.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police received a report at around 4.20pm on Wednesday, January 28 of a road traffic collision involving a car and a child pedestrian in the Mossvale Terrace area of Dromore, believed to have occurred at around 3pm.

“Officers attended the scene, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, who took the child to hospital for treatment to their injuries.”

The extent of the child’s injuries has not been disclosed.
