A recently refurbished traditional telephone kiosk  on the Huntly Road in Banbridge is to be retained.

And as the retro phone box is set against a listed building – formerly a grocery store and post office – there can be no better setting for the iconic street fixture.

ABC Planning officers noted in their repor that the telephone kiosk is located to the front of 190-192 Huntly Road, in the Lenaderg area, along the footpath.

“Officers, in consultation with HED (Historic Environment Division), are of the opinion that the works already carried out and proposed are in keeping with the materials and techniques found on the original telephone kiosk.”

A report, submitted by Simon Black Architecture, Richhill, as part of the planning application, gives additional information on the history of the telephone kiosk: “A ‘K6’ telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, dating from sometime between 1935 and c. 1953.

“The kiosk is located in the small settlement of Lenaderg, next to 190-192 Huntly Road, a property that served as a post office from the late 19th Century until 2000.

“The kiosk has the usual cast-iron body painted red, but with what appears to be largely replacement glazing.
