The road remains closed in both directions

A man has died following a road traffic collision on the A1 near the Outlet in Banbridge this afternoon.

The road has been closed in both directions with emergency services still on the scene.

A second man has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital with serious injuries.

Inspector Nigel Henry said: “ The collision, involving two cars, occurred at around 12.30pm this afternoon.

“One man died at the scene and another has been taken to hospital where he is described as being in a critical condition.

“The road is expected to remain closed for a number of hours whilst a thorough investigation into the collision is carried out.

“There are no further details at present.”

Armagh I understands that staff from a nearby Tesco rushed to offer assistance after a car, travelling from the Newry direction, lost control and crash into an oncoming vehicle.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
