Major search and rescue ongoing after reports of elderly man entered river in Dromore

Dromore town centre

Police and search and rescue teams are continuing an operation in Dromore today (Wednesday) following reports that an elderly man entered the river late on Tuesday afternoon.

Local councillor Paul Rankin confirmed that while Dromore town centre remained peaceful on Tuesday evening, emergency services were deployed along the river after concerns were raised for the man’s safety.

Search efforts have been focused on the stretch of river running from Bridge Street, through Dromore Park and out towards the Dronore Community Centre.

Councillor Rankin said he has been liaising directly with police and search and rescue personnel at the scene and was advised that the operation could continue overnight and into today.

Providing an update this morning, Councillor Rankin said police have confirmed that the search will continue throughout Wednesday, with river levels and strong flow hampering efforts.

Emergency services have again appealed for space and understanding from the public while the search continues.

“The family of this elderly man are foremost in our thoughts and prayers as they come to terms with what has happened,” Councillor Rankin said.

He also asked the local community to give emergency responders the time and space needed to carry out their work, describing the situation as deeply distressing for those involved.

“As someone who lost my own dad in sudden and tragic circumstances, I understand the turmoil this family will be going through,” he added. “They will need our prayers.”

Police and search teams remain on site and enquiries are ongoing.
