Funeral details announced for popular Banbridge publican Adrian Higgins

'It’s often said in jest, but this truly is a 'sad day for the parish.' Rest in eternal peace Aidy'

Funeral details have been announced following the passing of popular Banbridge publican Adrian Higgins.

Adrian was the proprietor of The Red Star Bar – known locally as Higgins’s – which is based on Scarva Street in the town.

He died peacefully yesterday (February 4) in Craigavon Area Hospital after a short illness.

According to a death notice, Adrian, formerly of Seapatrick Road, was the dearly beloved son of the late Michael and Gertie, the cherished brother of John, Michael and Patrick, the loving uncle of Emma, Michael, Niall, Christopher, Grace, Joanne and the late Claire and boyfriend of Lorraine.

His funeral will take place on Wednesday at 12pm, with Requiem Mass to be held at 1pm in the Church of St Therese, Banbridge.

Burial afterwards will be in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Dromore Road.

Following news of his passing, a number of organisations in Banbridge took to social media to pay tribute.

Barney Campbell, of Q Cabs Banbridge, said: “We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Aidy Higgins. On a personal level I will miss Aidy behind the bar, a real decent person who ran a great bar.

“As for Q Cabs, from day-one almost twenty seven years ago Aidy had a radio to book taxis for his customers, which was used countless times over the years, for this we are forever grateful.

“It’s often said in jest, but this truly is a “sad day for the parish.” Rest in eternal peace Aidy, from all at Q Cabs.”

Adrian was also the chairman of Banbridge & District Dart League.

They said: “Adrian has been ever present in the local dart scene and was always there to lend his support as landlord of the Red star/Higgins bar. We send our condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. As a mark of respect next week’s fixtures have been postponed.”

Banbridge Town FC added: “We as a club have lost a dear friend and a very generous sponsor who supported us every season going back quite a few years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Adrian’s girlfriend, Lorraine, his brothers, John, Michael, Patrick and the entire family circle May Adrian rest in eternal peace.”

Family flowers only. Donations in lieu if desired to the Southern Area Hospice, c/o Patricia Heaney, Heaney Keenan Funeral Directors, Head Office, 53 Patrick Street, Newry, BT35 8EB.
