At just nine years old, Kian “The Whip” McAviney is already a giant in the world of martial arts. While most kids his age are busy with school, the Dromore native, who trains at Full Circle Martial Arts in Belfast, is busy making a name for himself on the international stage.
The St Colman’s Primary pupil is already the reigning WKU, WKA, and WKO World Champion, dominating the sport’s biggest competitions. Since the start of the year alone, he’s racked up an incredible collection of medals, adding another Irish title and four Northern Irish titles to his name, proving he’s one of the toughest young fighters out there.
Never one to back down from a challenge, Kian decided to fight well above his category at the recent WKA Northern Ireland National Championships. He didn’t just move up a weight class – he jumped into a whole new age group, facing off against competitors as old as twelve.
The age and size difference didn’t matter. In an incredible display of skill, Kian out-fought everyone – kids and teens alike – to finish as the number one ranked competitor at the entire event. It’s the kind of performance that shows he’s truly a once-in-a-generation talent.
His coaches at Full Circle, led by Patrick Rice, have nurtured his abilities, and it shows. The Head of WKU Light Contact even praised Kian, noting that his technical skills are developing at a speed that’s rarely seen.
This past weekend really put his versatility to the test. He swapped the mats for the boxing ring, where he was matched against an older opponent who was also a current World Champion. But as a six-time World Champion himself, Kian wasn’t fazed. He put on a masterclass, winning both the WKA NI Full Contact and Boxing titles after two grueling three-round finals. One judge was particularly impressed, commenting on how “natural” his movement and ring-craft were for someone so young.

Not content with his success in the ring, Kian returned to the mats and completely dominated the Tatami events. Competing in Points Fighting, Low Kick, and Light Continuous divisions, he swept through world-class opponents with the blend of speed and tactical smarts that Full Circle fighters are known for.
These latest wins have punched his ticket to the WKU World Championships as part of Team Ireland. The event is currently set to take place in Abu Dhabi, though there’s a chance the location might change.
Regardless of where the tournament is held, Kian has sent a clear message: he’s the best in his division and thrives on taking on bigger challenges. As he continues to test himself against older, stronger opponents, Dromore’s young champion is the one everyone will be watching.
