Car lands on roof on A1 as police warn motorists over ‘hazardous driving conditions’

Weather warnings for rain and wind in place until this evening

A car came to rest on its roof on the A1 prompting fresh calls from police to exercise care on local roads.

Police in Banbridge said fortunately nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

It happened on the main A1 Newry-bound lane this morning.

The incident has led to police to once again ask motorists to slow down and take care given the hazardous driving conditions.

Police in Banbridge advised: “There is standing water on most roads and in particular on the A1. Reduce your speed and don’t take any risks.”

PSNI Road Policing tweeted: “Drivers please take care when out on the roads today. Strong winds and surface water are making driving conditions hazardous. Make sure your lights are working, slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.”

Weather warnings remain in place this afternoon until 6pm for both wind and rain as Storm Deidre continues to batter Northern Ireland.

Gusts of up to 70mph could be expected and there is potential for flooding and power cuts.
