Banbridge mourns loss of highly-respected businessman and ‘wonderful’ gentleman

Jim and Lena Lyttle

Banbridge is today mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, James ‘Jim’ Lyttle, founder of the long-established family business J. A. Lyttle.

Jim, whose peaceful passing at Daisy Hill Hospital on Thursday was announced by his family, was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather. His death comes just over two years after that of his late wife, Lena, who died peacefully in June 2023.

In a heartfelt message, Jim’s son Stephen confirmed the news, announcing that the family business will be closed temporarily: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our very much loved James Alexander Lyttle.

“The business will be closed temporarily as we take time to grieve and honour his memory. James was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

“We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time. Thank you.”

The business will remain closed on Friday and Saturday, September 12-13, reopening on Monday, September 15.

Jim was a well-known and highly regarded businessman in Banbridge, with the shop he founded celebrating 50 years of trading in 2022. Jim had stepped back from the business in recent years.

Jim will be remembered as a man of faith and integrity.

One mourner described him as “a true Christian gentleman of the highest degree”, while another said: “Your dad [Jim] was a gentleman. I have known him most of my life and he always had time for a chat. I remember fondly going to gospel meetings with him when I was a child.”

Others remembered Jim as “a great friend and neighbour” and that it was “always a pleasure to go into Lyttle’s shop.”

Jim is survived by his son Stephen and daughter Ruth, and was a devoted grandfather.

He will be remembered not only for his decades of service to the local community through his business, but also for the warmth, kindness and generosity he extended to all who knew him.
