Banbridge gym announces closure after 10 years to allow owner to focus on ‘true calling and passion’

'Is it upsetting? Yes. But is it the right thing to do? 100%. It’s the right thing for me, my family and members'

A Banbridge-based gym that has been at the heart of its community for a decade has announced its closure  to allow its owner to focus on his “true calling and passion”.

Knowledge Fitness Gym first opened its doors to the public back in 2015, when owner Stephen McCusker was just 25 years old.

Announcing the gym’s closure on social media, Stephen took the opportunity to reflect on those early days in business and admits, he “didn’t have a clue” – but acknowledges that what he did have were “great people around me”.

The premises at Scarva Industrial Estate will be closing for the final time on May 4.

Of his decision to close, Stephen explained: “It’s been a massive part of my life! To say closing was an easy choice would be a lie!

“Is it upsetting? Yes. But is it the right thing to do? 100%. It’s the right thing for me, my family and members.”

In the last year Stephen has taken up full-time employment as a Coaching Officer in a local school which he says he has loved “every minute” of.

The school have also supported the Personal Trainer through a two year PGCE during his employment.

He’s also enjoyed several years exploring his “true calling and passion” as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for Down GAA and clubs within counties Down and Armagh.

But, coupled with his employment in school he says it has all left “very little time for the gym” – which he acknowledges “isn’t fair on me or the members”.

Of his members, Stephen continues: “I owe the members, each and every one of you and I wish I could personally thank you all.

“You’ve seen me at my best, you were at my wedding and you have been a support network when I was down! You have helped shape me into the man I am today and I’m thankful for each and everyone you!”

He also took the time to thank his team and support network, adding: “To all the staff thank you.

“To all the PTs thank you. To Gary and Matty thank you. To Mark Campbell the biggest thank you.

“A special mention must go to Paul Heasley! He’s been a big brother and mentor to me still to this day. Thank you to my wife and family, I wouldn’t be where I am today without you all.

“To all the teams that used me and our facility thank you. From the local teams to professional – thank you all so much you paved the way and opened doors for me in the Strength and Conditioning world that I look forward to using now and in the future.

“I can’t say it enough and I don’t really know what else to say but thank you.”

While the physical doors of Knowledge Gym will close, Stephen says Knowledge will continue to operate in a personal training capacity both physically and online with athletes and teams only.

While many were understandably sad to see the beloved gym’s announcement, Knowledge Fitness Gym’s clients took the opportunity to wish the Personal Trainer good luck with his future endeavours and to acknowledge his commitment to them over the years.

One person said: “Can’t believe it Stevie though I do believe you are now following your true passion. I have loved my time at your gym and always felt very comfortable and welcome.

“You and Hannah were two amazing coaches. Best of luck in your new venture.”

Another added: “A decade of loving what you do in your own personal space is such an incredible blessing. So very proud of you and so excited for what’s to come for you guys in the future.

Always continue to follow your dreams and your passion no matter what you do.”
