Winter is here! Snow and ice warning in place with travel disruption expected on Thursday

A yellow weather warning is now in place for snow and ice across Co Armagh later this week.

The warning covers midnight on Wednesday until midday on Thursday, but snow is expected to arrive later on Tuesday and continue throughout Wednesday.

The heaviest snowfall is forecast for the small hours of Thursday morning, which may make travel difficult.

An ice warning is also in place, particularly for untreated secondary roads.

Temperatures are expected to drop as low as -4°C on Thursday, with a maximum of 4°C during the day. With the wind chill, it will feel much colder.

The average daytime high at this time of year is closer to 10°C; however, temperatures are expected to rise to around 8°C over the weekend.

The Met Office has also warned that hail and lightning may pose additional hazards over the next few days.

People are advised to keep up to date with information from local statutory bodies and to avoid travelling on Thursday morning if possible.
