Today, (Thursday) marks a “very sad day” in Armagh as the passing of “one in a million” Yvonne McArdle is announced.

Mother-of-four, Yvonne was a friend to many here in Armagh city.

And, those who called her a friend were immensely proud to do so.

Following a brave battle with cancer, Yvonne sadly passed away this morning (June 12).

In May, her son Gary had conducted an impressive fundraising effort on behalf of Friends of The Cancer Centre – who he said had supported “too many” generations of his family through the disease.

Inspired by Yvonne – who had herself raised substantial amounts of money for the cause over the years and even completing ten miles around the Mall for the charity in January while unwell – Gary undertook the Belfast Marathon to bring in funds.

Raising almost £6,000 for the charity, Gary said of the charity: “The Friends of the Cancer Centre is a charity that whilst, came in to my families world under sad and difficult circumstances, they have been such an amazing resource for hope and support!

“Throughout the years they provided amazing support through my Nanny and Papa’s cancer journey and have also been a huge crutch for my mum as she continues her battle with cancer.”

Sharing her pride in her son’s endeavour, Yvonne said ahead of Gary’s Marathon attempt: “Just one more sleep!

“I hope you know how proud I am of you Gary, I know it’s easier said than done but just get out and enjoy the entire marathon experience!

“Thanks again to every single person who sponsored Gary or who helped in any way to making tomorrow happen. I love you so much Gary, we have your back and will be with you every step of the way!”

Paying tribute to the inspirational Yvonne, one person said: “Yvonne you were one in a million, heart-breaking news, you always had time to speak and a smile to give.”

Another added: “Yvonne was a lady, always smiling always loving the craic. Fond memories starting the Nursing degree course together and the laughs we had along the way. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

The entire community’s thoughts and prayers are with Yvonne’s husband Marty, children Gary, Brógán, Aoibheann and Dáire and the wider extended family including siblings Tony, Ian and Terrie and grandchildren, Caitriona and Cormac.

Yvonne’s Funeral will take place on Saturday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 11.00am Mass followed by burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

May she Rest in Peace.
