Tributes have been paid to a young woman who was so well-respected within her community, and in sporting circles near and far.

Many described Aoife as “a lovely lady” – “beautiful inside and out”.

One person wrote: “[I am] totally heartbroken 💔 Aoife, you were one of life’s gems. You never passed always smiling and up for the craic you will be missed so much x.”

Derrynoose GAA club, which played a huge part in Aoife’s life, paid tribute: “The members of Derrynoose GAC deeply regret the death of former player Aoife Lennon who has tragically passed away on Wednesday, September 10.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Aoife’s wife Karen, her mum and dad Seamus and Adele, her brothers Patrick and Sean (Senior player), her nephew Jamie, her nieces Grace and Lila (underage players) and to her wider family circle.

“The Lennon family have asked for privacy this evening, wake open to public tomorrow Friday 12th September at her home on Drumnahavil Road.

“Burial Mass Saturday 2pm, St Mochua’s Church Derrynoose.

“Mary Queen of the Gael pray for her. RIP Aoife.”

SDLP Councillor for the area, Thomas O’Hanlon has spoken of the deep shock in the community.

He said: “The local community in Derrynoose and indeed further have afield have been just stunned since the terrible news filtered through on Wednesday evening.’

“Aoife was a brilliant girl with a big heart. She had a fantastic personality, she loved life and was a real character. This community is just devastated and everyone is struggling to get their heads around this.

“Aoife was an exceptional young woman—warm-hearted, full of life, and deeply committed to her community. Her vibrant personality and love for sport made her a cherished figure in Derrynoose and beyond. She was a proud Ladies Football player for Derrynoose and, after her playing days, continued to share her passion for Gaelic Games as a Schools Coach with Ulster GAA. Her dedication to nurturing young talent and promoting sport in local schools was truly inspiring.

“At times like this, words feel inadequate. But I know the people of Derrynoose will rally around Aofie’s wife Karen, her parents Adele and Seamus, her brothers Patrick and Sean, and the wider Lennon family in the days and weeks ahead. I extend my deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved Aofie. Her loss is immeasurable, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.”

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan commented: “I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences following the tragic death of a young woman in the Derrynoose community.

“My deepest sympathies are with the family at this devastating time.

“I also want to extend my condolences to her friends, teammates, and everyone at Derrynoose GAC, as well as the wider community — all of whom are in deep shock and mourning following the loss of someone so cherished and respected.

“The Derrynoose community has lost a bright and valued young woman, and her absence will be felt far and wide.

“I know the strength and unity of the Derrynoose community, and I’ve no doubt they will wrap around the family with love and support in the difficult days ahead.

“The family have asked for privacy, and I respectfully encourage everyone to honour that request.

”Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”
