Tributes paid following passing of former Pearse Óg President and republican activist Cathal McQuade

Tributes have been paid to former Pearse Óg GFC President and lifelong republican activist, Cathal McQuade, who has sadly passed away.

The Armagh city based club confirmed the news on Friday evening, describing Cathal as a “proud Pearse Óg man” and the son of founding member, Charlie McQuade.

In a statement, the club said: “We have been informed this evening that our former club President, Cathal McQuade, has passed away. As a mark of respect all club activities will be suspended until after his burial.

“Cathal was a proud Pearse Óg man and son of one of our founding members Charlie McQuade. We would kindly request that all available members attend his wake and funeral.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Sarah Duffy also paid tribute, describing Mr McQuade as a “proud and principled republican who gave a lifetime of service to the cause of Irish freedom.”

“From the Border Campaign in the 1950s, to enduring imprisonment and hunger strike, Cathal never wavered in his commitment to the republican struggle. He was courageous, loyal, and deeply respected across our community.

“Even in later years, Cathal continued to play an active role in Sinn Féin and in the McElvanna Corrigan Cumann. His integrity, resolve, legacy will never be forgotten.

Councillor Duffy extended her sympathies to Cathal’s loved ones: “I want to offer my sincere condolences to Cathal’s family, friends, and comrades at this sad time. We remember our comrade Cathal with immense pride.”e.
